Cavium Networks’ PureVu Processors Deliver the Ultimate Thrill of NASCAR and INDY Racing to the Living Room in Full HD
Cavium and Broadcast Sports Inc partner to enable “Cockpit View” at premier racing events nationwide
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., September 14, 2009 –
Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, wireless, storage, video and security applications, today announced that its PureVu H.264 HD video processors have been deployed by Broadcast Sports Inc in race cars at over 200 of the nation’s top auto-racing events. Broadcast Sports, Inc. has been using Cavium’s HD PureVu processors inside their on-board wireless HD cameras for transmission of live video feeds from race-cars at premier racing and sporting events including the Indy 500, Daytona 500 and the X Games.
Broadcast Sports, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications/WESCAM, delivers the compact, wireless HD broadcast camera systems that has been used in the cockpits of many race cars at various events nationwide. A COFDM microwave transmission link provides non line-of-sight transmission of the Audio/Video feeds to production and satellite uplink units. The PureVu video processor is used in these camera systems to compress the video in HD broadcast quality with a high degree of compression efficiency and low latency, to make live coverage in HD over wireless links possible from cameras within the race-cars.
“The notion of live broadcast of HD video directly from the race-car’s cockpit (driver’s view) has been a big hit with broadcasters and the viewers of NASCAR and Indy racing events. The key enabler for this system is Cavium’s unique high quality, low latency H.264 HD video encoding technology that enables efficient and immediate transmission of high quality video over a wireless link. This has been a major breakthrough in the sports broadcast arena, opening the door for BSI to bring viewers worldwide live sports coverage in HD,” said Adam Toner, Engineering Manager at Broadcast Sports, Inc.
The H.264 standard produces superior results at lower bit rates compared to the older MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video compression standards. However, the significantly higher computational complexity of H.264 poses a major challenge in terms of power and footprint. BSI found the solution to this dilemma in the PureVu encoders from Cavium Networks. These encoders compress 1080i/p HD video at 2x lower bit rates and 15% better signal-to-noise-ratio (a standard measure of video quality) than MPEG-2 HD encoders.
“PureVu’s industry leading Super Low Latency (SLL) encoding technology, combined with BSI’s HD camera and wireless transmission expertise have enabled widespread adoption of this technology across the nation’s top racing events. Cavium Networks is proud to partner with Broadcast Sports, Inc. to deliver the industry’s best H.264 HD broadcast quality solutions,” said Lars Herlitz, General Manager, Multimedia Group at Cavium Networks.
Cavium’s PureVu technology is specifically designed to handle very high resolution video compression (up to 1080p60) with encoding latency of less than 2ms. This capability makes the solution ideal for latency sensitive applications such as live broadcast, video conferencing, home video distribution, and gaming. Cavium’s family of industry leading super low latency PureVu processors are shipping in volume in a number of HD capture and display applications.
